Friday, March 07, 2008 Capitol hands out goods to victims of Tabunok fire
THE Provincial Government will give away P5,000 worth of housing materials to victims of the fire in Sitio Sambagan, Barangay Tabunok, Talisay City, Wednesday night.
The fire razed at least 200 houses, displacing 259 families.
Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia yesterday distributed blankets, mats, ice and milk to about 800 individuals affected by the fire at the Tabunok Sports Complex.
The province will work with the Talisay City Government in looking for a property where the affected families can build their new homes.
Garcia says she believes it is always better to give away housing materials rather than cash.
Another important problem that officials need to deal with focus is accessibility of roads in the area to firetrucks.
Initial investigation showed that the fire ignited when sparks from an electric post landed on a pile of bamboo slats and amakan sheets displayed for sale.
Meanwhile, the governor also assured burial and financial assistance to relatives of casualties in the Argao blast.
An explosion inside a coal mine in a mountain barangay in Argao killed miners Avelino Pantojan and Sonny Alberca.
The blast happened at around 6 p.m. last Sunday but they weren’t pulled out until 2 a.m. the next day since the other miners feared inhaling hazardous gases inside the mine.
Police sent investigators to the area but initial investigation indicated methane gas as the cause of the blast. (JGA)
