Cenabre outlasts Soon in Prince All Students tilt

DON Bosco College’s Paolo Cenabre survived a scare to move to the Round-of-16 in the Prince All-Students tennis competition which opened yesterday at the Alta Vista Tennis Courts.

Cenabre moved to the next round of the secondary boys division after sneaking past Christian Dale Soon of Mandaue Christian School, 8-7 (6).

Cenabre had to overhaul a three-game deficit early in the competition and fended off Soon’s strong start to take the win.

Soon won the first three games and was leading, 3-0, before Cenabre composed himself and got back on track. Cenabre then swept the next three games to level the match.

After the tie, both players exchanged holds of the lead until 7-all, forcing the tiebreak.

With the match lasting for more than an hour, an exhausted Soon lost his energy, giving Cenabre a chance to snatch the victory.

Cenabre will next face Inigo Garcia of Naga National High School.

Garcia advanced to the next round after trouncing Amado Lominique of Mandaue Christian School, 8-3.

Meanwhile, University of the Visayas’ Cyril Camporedondo also made it to the next round after preying on fellow UV player Mark Enriquez, in an easy 8-2 win.

Second round

University of San Jose-Recoletos’ Joseph Tallo will be seeing action in the round of 16 after defeating Ariel Jay Torion of University of San Carlos North Campus, 8-3. (MCB)
