Bry. chiefs want to widen network

THE Liga nga mga Barangay will create regional chapters to foster camaraderie and better coordination among Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) chapters in each region.

Rico Judge Echiverri of Caloocan City, 4th Liga national president, said this is among the projects the league will do under his term.

“Para magkakilala rin kayo (so you will know each other). Kayo ba magkakila sa mga kapitan nga Mandaue? Di ba hindi? Kung may regional Liga, you meet in a sportsfest for example, you exchange ideas and in the process help each other,” he said in last Saturday’s ABC general assembly attended by 66 of 80 Cebu City barangay captains.

After his recent election as Liga president, Echiverri is currently visiting the chapters nationwide to hear firsthand the barangay captains concerns.

He said that with a regional Liga, unity is strengthened. And with the existence of regional officers, the national Liga is able to better implement its goals.

National search

Among others, Echiverri said he wanted Christmas bonus, insurance coverage, medical care, matriculation and tuition for barangay officials’ children, and civil service eligibility for them.

He is also eyeing a databank for better profiling of all barangays; national search for outstanding chapter, chapter president, and barangay; barangay “komiks” for officials to better know the law; and a newsletter of quarterly dissemination to all barangays.

He also said the league will come up with a national ID system that will be implemented with the assistance of the Department of Interior and Local Government.

He also planned link with the leagues of cities, municipalities, and provinces; the creation of a Liga committee on constitutional amendment; and making the ABC a party-list group, being considered a non-government organization.

Projects

He vowed to continue the projects of the Liga’s previous officials, among them the medical benefits with the Philippine Heart Center and the National Kidney Transplant Institute, medical missions, breastfeeding programs and establishment of mother support groups, income and livelihood programs, and literacy programs.

ABC president Eugenio Faelnar informed the barangay captains that he, too, will visit them to know their concerns.

Echiverri assured the barangay captains that the national Liga will not come up with a stand without consulting all of its 190 chapters. (RHM)
