AUBF head: Cebu to host Asian hoops

ASIAN University Basketball Federation (AUBF) president Shin Dong Pa, the legendary shooter from Korea, has officially announced the hosting of the 6th Asian University Basketball Championship (AUBC) for Men in Cebu City from July 5 to 12.

Shin Dong Pa, a well-respected basketball leader from Korea announced that the AUBC will be hosted by BAP president Prospero “Butch” Pichay in cooperation with Cebuano sports patron Lorenzo “Chao” Sy.

There will be 10 teams in this competition with three coming from Cebu—the top three finishers of the recently concluded 62nd National Students Basketball Championships. There will also be two from Luzon, the University of Luzon and a special team invited by Pichay and one each from Korea, China, Chinese-Taipei, Malaysia and Japan.

Winner

Last year, Sangmu Military College of Korea won the 5th AUBC title over the Rizal Technological University Bombers of coach Ato Tolentino in Daet, Camarines Norte in Bicol.

Aside from the schools, the big names of Asian basketball are also expected to attend the competition. The officials will be led by AUBF Honorary Chairman Dr. Carl Menky Ching, AUBF Vice Presidents’ Dr. Ekodjatmiko Sukarso of Indonesia’s Ministry of National Education, Madam Liu Yumin of the Chinese Basketball Association, and Dr. Robert Milton Calo of the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines and AUBF Board of Directors from Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, Vietnam, Singapore, Lebanon, and Chinese-Taipei.

Meanwhile, BAP Secretary General Graham Lim has been tasked by Pichay to prepare the China trip of the Southwestern University Cobras, the champions of the 62nd NSBC held here two weeks ago.

SWU will be going to the Fujian Province of China together with the high school champions Benedictine International School in Alabang, to play exhibition games against the teams from the hosst province on April 2 to 6. (RCM)
