DTCC retakes No. 1 spot in DSCPI rankings

DTCC opened the year right as it came up with an explosive performance in the Dancesport Council of the Philippines Inc (DSCPI) first quarterly ranking and competition last Friday at the Philsports Arena with 14 golds, seven silvers and three bronze medals.

DTCC only came up with decent finishes in the quarterly rankings last year as it only sent token delegations to focus its resources on the staging of an international event.

This time, the DTCC dance athletes are back to a position very familiar to them—on top—as they came up with the best finish among the other contenders from all over the country.

“We set this direction to go for the gold again six months ago. This is the fruit of that goal. The teachers did a good job. For a year (last year), the team was so consumed organizing the international competition, the year-round barangay workshops that we have set this aside for a while. And then six months ago, we decided to go for the gold and we achieved that,” DTCC director Ed Hayco said.

Major boost

Apart from being the overall winner, Cebu got a major boost when the DSCPI board decided that the mid-year ranking set on July 12 will be held in Cebu.

Jenette Flores of the DTCC secretariat said the board decided on this because they wanted more competitors from the Visayas and Mindanao to join.

“The board wanted the Mindanao teams to join. Mostly, those from Zamboanga, Cadiz, Tacurong, General Santos and Davao among others will only join the competitions if it was held and organized in Cebu,” said Flores adding that for Mindanao athletes, it is much too expensive to travel all they way to Manila than to Cebu.

Leading the carnage for the Cebuanos were young dance athletes Wilbert Aunzo and Pearl Marie Caneda, who collected three gold medals for the team, winning in the Junior A Latin and Standard and Junior C Standard.

Kathleen and Jason Deluvio were the other big winners in the competition having won two gold medals.

The successful Deluvio brother-sister tandem and other junior players are a testament to the success of the barangay-based grassroots program of DTCC. The Deluvios were discovered when DTCC trainers were conducting classes in the barangays and are now familiar fixtures in the DTCC dance studio at the Cebu City Sports Center.

They won the titles in the Latin and standard dances of the juvenile event.

Adding more gold medals to DTCC’s haul were Samson Orlanes and Mae Pabuaya as they collected two in the Youth C class.

Winners

The other gold medal winners were Victoria Alix and Renante Saldua (Senior A Standard), Eleanor Hayco and Lloyd Bartolini (Special event 2F standard), Jumil Bacalso and Daine Balili (youth A standard), Rodulfo Beltran and Gemville dela Cerna (Grade E standard), Jojit Cabuenas and Merlyn Capacio (Senior Latin), Ismael Sarmiento and Cecilia Llamedo (Senior C Standard) and Kevin Minoza and Rhoda Fernandez (Youth A Latin).

The silver winners were Joel and Anabelle Madera (Standard Grade A), Marlon Segismar and Antoinette Almeda (Standard Grade E), Kelly Jay Deluvio and Grace Diana Silud (Junior C standard), Geovanne Dawa and Michaelyn Ledda (Special Event 1F), Christopher Albert Corro and Lilibeth Paz (Special Event 1M) and Lowel Bernados and Jeanen Bergado (Grade B Standard).

Taking home the bronze were Jimmy Noel and Eleanor (Special Event 2F), Romeo Cialbo and Hanna Jane Deluvio (Standard Special Event 1F), and Bjorn Torreon and Therese Tan (Grade E Standard). (MCB)
