SWU squads pull surprise in beach volley

TWO Southwestern University (SWU) teams breezed through their opponents in two different occasions with convincing victories to share unblemished records with defending champion University of the Visayas in the second day of the 2nd M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala All-Ladies Beach Volleyball Open at the Wiggy’s Beach Resort and Casino yesterday.

The SWU Team A of Florriane Guttierez and Jannelle Tabio trampled Tabio’s ex-partner Marites Natad and Christine Rose Bohol of Arthro Kontra Arthritis in a lopsided 25-4 victory, while newcomers Jessa Satina and Lori Mae Layno of SWU team B stunned RTM’s Lynette Auza and Renicael Berdon in a convincing 25-14 win.

Coach Janeth Ponte was proud of the performance of her two teams.

“I’m happy with the victories of our two teams especially with team B because they are still new to beach volleyball,” said SWU handler Ponte in an interview by Sun.Star Cebu.

Ponte wants to improve the defense of her inexperienced Team B because they are bound to face more experienced teams in this tournament.

“They need to have attitude and self confidence. We need to practice and work on their defense because they are going to face veterans of beach volleyball in their upcoming games,” said Ponte.

UV and both SWU squads are at the top spot of the tournament with two wins and no losses.

Meanwhile, the University of San Jose-Recoletos Team A of Genie Sabas and Michelle Simbajon defeated Marissa Lagancia and Mechelle Matuguina of Heartvit but their Team B of Aina Laroga and Joy Bonita suffered a nail biting 24-26 loss to University of Southern Philippines Foundation’s Yvonne Verano and Danika Gendrauli.
