Tuesday, March 11, 2008 Art for the unschooled By Ritchie Landis Doner Quijano
NOT a lot are born with talent, but artists can be made because art is a teachable and learnable skill. At the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda), art is now integrated into their program. Art should be accessible even to financially challenge students. So Tesda is offering their services for free especially to out-of-school-youths and unemployed adults.
And they have recently culminated their first three months of training a number of students who are now painting in earnest under the tutelage of Erlando Majan as their art instructor. Their works comprise of mainly paintings made with different, traditional mediums, like oil and watercolor.
Most eager to expose their works in public, they have made the first steps to bring their paintings inside a gallery for an exhibition. They have an ongoing art show at the Metropolitan Cathedral Museum of Cebu. It features the pioneering student works that show qualities of great promise should they continue to pursue the craft long after they have completed their Tesda training.
The group show is participated in by Jennifer Pastrano, John Jerson Pasigna, Mark Lizaran, Felbert Garces, Arven May Arriesgado, Elgeniel Nangit, Cliff Charcony Nangit, Gemmar Orcia, Arnel Largo, Mark Lloyd Belicario, Ruffa Angela Genargue, Shemida Alino, Darel Paquibot, Cyrelle Tuanzon, Gerard Enclonar and Honorato Dosdos who are all ready at this very early stage to show the world what they are capable of. Here’s hoping you’ll all make it big one day and welcome to the very exciting life of an artist.
