Cepca kiddies tourney

THE Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association will be having its monthly Kiddies tournament this Sunday at 1 p.m. at the SM Deep Blue Café.

Tournament official Tony Cabibil said yesterday that players will be playing via a five-round Swiss system format with 15 minutes time control.

He said that Marq, Felix Shaun and John Frances Balbona, along with Rhenzi Kyle Sevillano and Patrick Osorno, are the players to beat among the 30 expected participants.

The Balbona siblings dominated the Cepca kiddies January edition finishing in first, second and third places respectively, while Sevillano ruled last month’s tournament.

Osorno, on the other hand, took the February juniors Cepca title.

Registration is pegged at P40.

Cepca founder and Sun.Star Cebu Sports columnist Frank “Boy” Pestaño yesterday said the kiddies tournament will be held first to give way for Balbona’s availability during this time since their father Felix, who is also a Cepca member, is working in Manila.

On the other hand, Cepca members will vie for this month’s title on March 23 at the same venue via a five round Swiss system.

Players are given 15 minutes to finish the game, said Cabibil. (NSM)
