Officials ready for 'Buhing Kalbaryo'
ACTORS as young as 14 years old will reenact the passion and death of Christ in the 11th staging of “Buhing Kalbaryo” in Cebu City, which will again feature a live crucifixion of an actor portraying Jesus.
On Good Friday, the Catholic faithful will get to watch three plays in one day, including the Passion of Christ, which will feature the Last Supper and the time when Judas killed himself out of remorse for betraying Jesus.
This will also include the scene where Peter denied three times that he knew Jesus and his subsequent anguish over what he did.
Street play
The second play would be a street play, which will show the stations of the cross from Barangay Pahina Central to Calamba and Guadalupe.
The last play will be about the Seven Last Words of Jesus, which will highlight the two miracles He performed.
Cebuano writer and director Al Evangelio said the street play will link up the past with “contemporary responsibilities.”
For example, he said, Simon of Cyrene, who helped Jesus carry the cross, would represent the wives and husbands who share the burden in raising their children to become good Christians.
Cedrick Tumulak II, Buhing Pasko Association Inc. project director, said the activity will start at 11 a.m. at the Cebu City Sports Center.
After the one-hour-and-a-half presentation, the Station of the Cross will follow starting at Pahina Central.
Tumulak said that another actor will play the role of Jesus during the crucifixion and the Seven Last Words, as the one who will participate in the street play would already be exhausted by then.
Vice Mayor Michael Rama thanked Evangelio and other individuals who helped make this year’s Buhing Kalbaryo a reality and lauded the young actors for their dedication.
Attraction
“The group would like to become the means, the catalyst, the venue where transformation, conversion, as well as spiritual nourishment can be obtained,” he said in yesterday’s press conference.
The event has already become an attraction that Cebuanos find time to witness, said Rama, Buhing Kalbaryo 2008 overall chairman.
Evangelio said the group ran into several problems, but he is confident that they will be able to perform this Good Friday.
He said that while the actors are not seasoned performers, he was moved by their sincerity and fervor in portraying their respective roles.
Aside from the Good Friday presentations, the cast of 124 youth from Guadalupe will also stage a play on Palm Sunday. The same group will also present Jesus’ resurrection on Easter Sunday during the “Sugat” at the Guadalupe Parish grounds. (RHM)
