Sunday, March 16, 2008 Roxas bats for hike in minimum wage
SENATOR Mar Roxas is pushing for an increase in the basic pay of minimum wage earners as a means to help solve the poverty besetting the country.
“Clearly, we have to implement our laws relative to wage increase. Following the wage increase is a step of solving the problem (on poverty),” Roxas told close to 2,000 delegates of the Rotary Club International (district 3860) at the Cebu International Convention Center.
Roxas compared the undertakings of the Rotary Club to the National Government, saying that while the organization works the government doesn’t.
Roxas emphasized that the success of an organization usually stems from its “design, not from its fault.”
Design
“The design means you have the objectives, you expect higher than what you could attain and you go out and do it,” he said.
Roxas also said the government should focus on its resources and equip Filipinos with skills and competencies to harness their best potential.
“Filipinos are great people. We have a great culture. We actually need to realize our highest and best potentials. Never ever give up on our future,” said Roxas.
Unfortunately, the senator said, the government doesn’t see such matter.
“The destiny of a nation is very much dependent on what its citizens do,” emphasized Roxas.
Competence
Last Thursday, Roxas visited Tsuneishi Heavy Industries (Cebu) in Balamban town. There, the senator underlined the need to enhance the competency of the skilled workers and professional workers by providing them with trainings to upgrade their expertise.
He, however, admitted that the government can do nothing to prevent these skilled workers and professionals from going abroad and look for better-paying jobs.
“What we must do for our country and for our people is to constantly provide them training and skills competency development so that they can actualize their potentials whether her domestically or abroad,” said Roxas. (GMD)
