Mares downs Gabi in two

DIOSDADO “Prince” Gabi suffered a second round TKO against unbeaten Mexican Abner Mares in the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Marquez fight yesterday.

With the win, the Mexican kept his North American Boxing title Champion after knocking down Gabi twice in the second round, forcing the referee to stop the match.

The former Olympian improved his still unscathed record to 16 wins with 10 knockouts, while the Filipino, who also lost to Marquez in 2005, dropped to 30- 4– 1, with 22 KOs.

In supporting bout World Boxing Organization featherweight titlist Steven Luevano (35-1, 15 KO’s) came back from a knock down in round four and won a convincing unanimous decision against Terdsak Jandaeng (29-2, 19 KO’s) of Thailand.

One judge scored the bout 118-109 while the other two had it at 119-109.

Next foe

In a non-title 10-rounder, David Diaz (34-1-1, 17 KO’s) punched his way to capture a majority decision win over Pacquiao sparring partner Ramon Montano (14-4-2).

Diaz is one of the fighters whom Arum wants to let Pacquiao face next once the Filipino champion decides to move up to the 135-pound division.

Another Pinoy knockout artist Michael Farenas (20-2-2, 18 KO’s) scored also scored a third-round TKO victory against Baudel Cardenas (17-13-2, 6 KO’s) of Mexico.

Cardenas was dropped to the canvas by Farenas twice in the second round and was hit by a low blow in the third round.

Undefeated welterweight Danny Garcia (4-0, 4 KO’s) needed only 43 seconds as he connected with a left hook to score the first round KO victory over Charles Wade (4-5, 1 KO).

Byron Tyson (9-0-2, 4 KO’s) shared a unanimous draw with Esau Herrera (15-3-1, 8 KO’s) in their super welterweight bout. (EKA)
