Tuesday, March 18, 2008 2 men shot dead in Mandaue City; suspects claim victims attacked them
TWO young men were shot dead in Mandaue City before dawn yesterday but the suspects alleged that the victims tried to chase and hurt them for unknown reasons.
Police ruled out gang war saying it is likely to be a case of “paregla,” or random violence.
The incident happened on M.C. Briones St., Barangay Tipolo at 3:45 a.m.
PO3 Rowena Serato of Subangdaku Police Station identified those who were killed as Marc Oliver Baguio, 18 and Dexter Estreller, 19.
Baguio, who lives in Barangay Tipolo sustained a gunshot wound in the neck and the bullet went through. Estreller, who is from Jaime Compound, Barangay Tipolo, was hit in the chest.
Residents rushed the two victims to Vicente Sotto Medical Center. Serato said Baguio was the first to die.
Subangdaku Police Chief Sr. Insp. Eddie Castañeda said they now have in their custody two suspects in the killing, Darriel Heyrosa, 21, of Barangay Alang Alang and Jaspher Cabantan Uy, 19, of Barangay Looc.
Castañeda said Eben Labao, the suspected gunman, is still at large but they already have his picture.
Baguio’s mother Diosdada told PO3 Nirsas Baay and PO1 Bryan Berrenguer that her son and Estreller had just eaten siomai and were on their way home when shot by the suspects.
But the suspects told Castañeda that they were the victims of paregla and were the ones attacked by the victims. This was why they ran towards the barangay hall, resulting in their arrest.
They alleged that they were walking home from Paseo in Mabolo and were passing by the area when they met Baguio and Estreller.
They told Castañeda that the victims were with four others and were already surrounding them.
Seeing that they were outnumbered they fled towards the barangay hall leaving behind Labao. It was then that they heard shots. (OCP)
