2 more suspects in killing of MEZ worker arrested

LAPU-Lapu policemen captured yesterday alleged accomplices of the suspected robber who shot dead a Mactan Export Zone (MEZ) worker Tuesday.

Police also recovered the gun used in the killing and the victim’s cell phone.

Nelson Tinio, 18, and a 17-year-old suspect, name withheld for being a minor, were arrested yesterday.

With the arrest, police charged the two together with Julius Gingoyon, who was arrested earlier, with homicide and robbery.

The three are accused of killing and robbing Virginia Berame Baguio, a 32-year-old mother of two.

Baguio worked for Alta Mode Inc., a locator inside MEZ II in Barangay Basak, Lapu-Lapu City.

According to SPO2 Rolito Jumao-as, homicide officer, Gingoyon confronted the victim while she was walking towards the Circumferential Road to catch a ride. Witnesses pointed to him as the one who shot Baguio in the head.

The 17-year-old suspect gave himself up after Gingoyon was arrested at the South Bus Terminal. Through him, police was led to Tinio.

A team led by Senior Insp. Conrado Manatad arrested Tinio and recovered the .38 revolver used in the robbery and the victim’s cell phone, a Nokia 3310, said homicide investigator PO3 William Homoc.

Among the documents they submitted to support the charges against the suspect was an account by a gasoline boy, whom police asked not to be named, who saw the suspect shoot the victim.

Efforts

Oppus said timely reporting and the cooperation between police and the community led to the swift solution of the crime.

“Majority of our success is through the combined effort of the community and the police,” said Oppus. He also thanked residents and bystanders in Private and South Bus Terminal for the immediate arrest of Gingoyon.

Meanwhile, support for the victim’s daughter, who is scheduled to graduate next week, are coming in, some coursed through the Sun.Star Cebu office.

The office of Rep. Nerissa Soon-Ruiz gave P1,000 through a Sun.Star reporter for the victim’s family.

Senior Supt. Augusto Marquez, Police Regional Office 7 Intelligence chief, came to Sun.Star Cebu to give P1,000 to buy shoes for Krisna Jen, the victim’s eldest daughter.

The victim was looking forward to collecting her pay to buy Krisna Jen a new pair of shoes for her graduation next week. Krisna is expecting to get a citation.

Earlier yesterday, Sun.Star Cebu received calls from benefactors asking for Baguio’s address in Sitio Toril in Barangay Canjulao. They said they also wanted to give something to Krisna.

Sun.Star tried to give the money to Krisna yesterday but she wasn’t at her house. Sun.Star Cebu will hand over the money next week, before Krisna’s graduation at the Babag I Elementary School. (OCP)
