Construction worker stabbed dead
DRIVEN by a grudge, a 25-year-old construction worker stabbed a fellow worker to death using an improvised weapon inside a construction site in Barangay Busay, Cebu City yesterday dawn.
Garry D. Padere, who lives in Barangay Awihaw, Toledo City and a laborer of Primary Construction, was arrested by PO3 Adelino Demoy and Barangay Busay chief tanod Benedicto Tabarno for killing Baldomero Makabenta inside their shanty at 4:15 a.m.
He stabbed Makabenta 33 times.
Police recovered the instrument used by Padere in the killing.
PO1 Edario Manatad, one of the responding Homicide Section investigators, said Makabenta died minutes after he was taken to Chong Hua Hospital.
Camp Sotero
Padere, in an interview with reporters at the police stockade inside the Camp Sotero Cabahug, admitted attacking Makabenta.
He said he has been harboring a grudge against Makabenta after the latter scolded Padere last December for refusing to cook their rice for dinner.
“Nahiubos ko pag-ayo niya. Gikasab-an ko niya pag-ayo (I felt bitter after he scolded me),” Padere said.
Since then, Padere said he and Makabenta have not spoken to each other.
At dawn yesterday, Padere, who said he had taken some glasses of liquor but was not drunk, spotted Makabenta sleeping in the shanty.
Padere said he lost control of himself, got hold of the sharpened steel and attacked Makabenta.
Startled
“Napawong na akong panan-aw (My sight dimmed),” he said, who got startled to learn from reporters that the victim suffered more than 30 stab wounds.
In a separate incident yesterday, a native wine vendor also died of stab wounds in the chest and neck after he was attacked by a trisikad driver.
The incident occurred past 2 a.m. in Sitio Bontores, Barangay Basak San Nicolas.
Tanods
The victim was identified as Antonio Alsola, 51, who resided in the area.
Suspect Edgardo T. Sabroso, alias Ega, 28, who also lives in the same barangay was arrested by tanods Leonilo Navarra, Franklin Gellat and Oliver Caballuna.
Sabroso is now detained at the Mambaling Police Station.
Homicide investigators led by SPO4 Alex Dacua are still determining why Sabroso stabbed Alsola. (JST)
