Organizers plan musicale for Buhing Kalbaryo '09
EVEN before the 11th staging of the “Buhing Kalbaryo,” its organizers are already planning to make it into a full-blown musical play next year.
And Cebuano writer and director Al Evangelio wants Cebuano singers Raki Vega, Dulce, and Sheryn Regis to be in it.
Evangelio said in a press conference at Cebu City Vice Mayor Michael Rama’s office yesterday that a full-blown musicale is a longtime visio for the reenactment of the passion and death of Christ.
This year’s staging is a step towards that direction, as songs are inserted in between dialogues.
Tomorrow, Good Friday, the cast of 127 youths from Barangay Guadalupe will stage the Passion of Christ at the Cebu City Sports Center at 11 a.m., featuring the Last Supper, among others.
Seven Last Words
After the one-hour-and-a-half presentation, the Station of the Cross will follow starting at Barangay Pahina Central to Calamba and Guadalupe.
The last part of the “Buhing Kalbaryo” will feature the Seven Last Words of Jesus at the Guadalupe Parish.
Organizers hope to end it at 3 p.m., the hour that Jesus is said to have died.
The same cast will also present Jesus’ resurrection on Easter Sunday during the “Sugat” at the Guadalupe Parish grounds.
About 85 percent of the cast are out-of-school youths. But from the 144 original number, the cast was reduced to 127.
Evangelio, writer and director of Buhing Kalbaryo for nine years, said some of the players had to go because they lacked seriousness during practices.
Even when the group practiced for only three weeks, Evangelio is confident tomorrow’s presentation will be successful.
Aside from giving out-of-school youths an outlet for their talents, the annual show also serves as instruments for conversion, Evangelio said. (NRC)
