CAFC to stage 8th Interclub in April; eyes RP team

AFTER almost a year-long lull, Cebu will finally get to witness some top class football action as the Cebu Amateur Football Club stages the 8th Cebu Inter-Club Football Invitational Tournament on April 27 to May 4 in different venues in the city.

The one-week event, the first non-school based 11-a-side event in Cebu since the Aboitiz Age Group in 2006, will have competition in the 38-Above, Men’s Open, Ladies Open, 15-Under and the 12-under categories.

Aside from the Cebu-based clubs, the organizer is also planning to invite teams from Davao City, Cagayan de Oro, Butuan, Iligan as well as teams from Luzon.

The games will be split at the Cebu City Sports Center, University of San Carlos Technological Center, Paref-Springdale and San Roque football fields

According to Richard Montayre of CAFC, they will invite the RP football team but they will have to give a formal letter through the new board after the Cebu Football Association elections on March 29.

“We haven’t confirmed the participation of the RP team. We’ll give a formal letter through the Cebu FA board after the elections,” said Montayre in an interview by Sun.Star Cebu.

RP team head coach Nonoy Fegidero, who led West Negros College to the crown and the P45,000 top prize in 2006, earlier told Pinoysoccer.com that he welcomes tune up matches for the team which will compete in the Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup in Iloilo in May.

If the RP team pushes through with its participation, local fans will finally get the chance to see players like Phil Younghusband, Chris Greatwitch and team captain Ali Borromeo in action.

For the Inter-Club, each category will have a maximum of 10 teams each. If a category will have more than seven teams, the squads will be divided into two brackets.

Categories with less than seven teams will have just one bracket and will play a single round robin.

Registration fee for teams from the 38 above, Men’s Open and Women’s Open category will be P5,000 while for categories 15 under and 12 under will be for free. (EKA)
