Review center opens to train globally competitive nurses

POISED to train “globally competitive” nurses, Edgeworth Review and Educational Center stresses on developing sound clinical skills among its reviewers.

“The trend right now demands nurses with advanced clinical skills,” said Jerome Mansibang, Edgeworth academic director and co-founder.

Mansibang said that some nursing graduates do not know how to read ectrocardiogram, X-ray and blood pressure, which are considered basic clinical skills.

Due to this, he shared that some Filipino nurses in Australia were sent back to the Philippines.

Clinical skills

“Our weakness as Filipino nurses is that we lack clinical skills. Our vision as a review center is not just to prepare our students to pass the board examinations. Beyond that, we aim to equip them with the necessary skills that they need to be globally competitive,” Mangsibang said.

Mangsibang attributes the “deteriorating” health care skills of Filipino nurses to be an offshoot of a “decaying education system.”

He said that nursing schools are more concerned about recruiting many students rather than maintaining quality.

Due to this, nursing review centers are challenged to take on a new task, he said.

“Review centers now no longer act as review centers. We are forced to augment the schools by extending our service as education and training centers,” he said.

Accredited

Edgeworth is one of the only two nursing review centers in the country that are accredited by the Commission on Higher Education.

The review center limits the number of class sizes from 150 to a maximum of 300 students compared to other centers that crams a thousand students in one time.

“We provide a more focused and personalized teaching,” said Mangsibang.

Edgeworth posted a 100 percent passing rate in the 2004, 2005 and 2006 nursing board examinations.

Last year, it posted a 98 percent passing rate, way above national passing rate.

The review center maintains an “exclusive” rooster of competent lecturers.

Edgeworth in Cebu is located at 350-T Urgello St. Classes will start on April 2. (JSC)
