Shooting, hacking in Talisay spoil 'peaceful' season

EASTER Sunday in Talisay City turned out bloody with the shooting to death of a scavenger and the hacking of a young nursing student.

Edward Calma, a scavenger of Barangay Carreta, Cebu City, was having a drinking bout with friends when two unidentified men shot him twice.

His attackers suddenly arrived at the hut along the Mananga riverbank where Calma and his friends were hanging out around 9 p.m., said SPO4 Romeo Hurboda, Talisay City PNP duty officer.

The gunmen later fled towards the interior of Sitio Kawatan in the neighboring barangay of Tabunok, Talisay City.

Sitio Kawatan earned its moniker from being considered a sanctuary for criminals in Talisay.

Hurboda said Calma was first taken to the Talisay City District Hospital in Barangay San Isidro.

However, he was transferred to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City where he died later, the policeman said.

Four hours earlier, nursing student Kevin Anito, 18, of Barangay Colon, Naga City, was attacked by a bolo-wielding man in the coastal barangay of Cansojong.

Like Calma, Anito was rushed to the district hospital but was later transferred to Vicente Sotto because of serious hack wounds in the head and back.

Attack

He is still recuperating in the hospital.

Hurboda said Anito and a neighbor, Ruby Jumag, had just taken a bath at an artesian well and were on their way out of Paz Beach Resort when the incident happened.

The victim and his friends spent Easter Sunday at the resort.

The unidentified attacker reportedly tapped Anito in the back and then punched him in the mouth. This made Anito fall, Hurboda said.

While Anito tried to get up, the man hacked him in the head with a bolo.

His attacker then hacked him in the neck and the back.

Luckily, the wounded Anito was able to run towards the barangay hall, where he sought help of tanods, Hurboda said.

Responding tanods went to the site but Anito’s attacker had already gone. (GC)
