Driver shot dead in Punta Princesa

A HABAL-HABAL (motorcycle-for-hire) driver was gunned down late Monday night in an argument over an old traffic incident.

A team of Homicide Section investigators led by SPO4 Alex Dacua found Jacquelino G. Obaob, 19, lying on his back with multiple gunshot wounds on F. Llamas St. in Barangay Punta Princesa, Cebu City.

Obaob was a resident of Sitio Canduloy, Barangay Tisa.

The suspect was identified as Francis Magos, of legal age, single, and living in an apartment at Pleasant Homes, Punta Princesa.

Danilo Rabe, 21, also a habal-habal driver, told Dacua’s team he was sitting on his motorcycle past 11 p.m. Monday when he spotted Magos approach Obaob, who was standing near him (Rabe).

An argument ensued between Magos and Obaob, he said.

Magos allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Obaob several times.

Magos continued to shoot Obaob even when the latter was already on the ground, Rabe said.

PO1 Edario Manatad, in a mobile phone interview, said Magos shot Obaob thrice before the latter fell to the ground and finished the victim off with two more shots.

Magos fled from the area by boarding Rabe’s motorcycle, and, at gunpoint, ordered the driver to bring him to Salvador St.

When they reached Salvador St., Magos alighted and boarded a taxicab.

Homicide investigators and responding police operatives from Punta Princesa Police Station and Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) recovered four empty shells from a .45 pistol and three slugs.

According to initial information, the incident may have been triggered by a previous conflict between Magos and Obaob.

PO1 Manatad said Obaob’s motorcycle had sideswiped a jeepney owned by Magos.

There was also a report that Magos was Obaob’s former employer, but their relationship turned sour.

Manatad, however, said they still have to verify these.

He said policemen from Punta Princesa, Swat and his team went to Magos’ apartment but failed to find him there. (JST)
