Chiongbian: Hit and Giggle and the four-club event
By Edgar R. Chiongbian
Teetime

THE annual Easter golf extravaganza at Cebu Country Club (CCC) went on its merry way with its untraditional format of the Four-Club and Hit and Giggle golf tournaments. And as before, there were very predictable results of low scores, even with fewer golf clubs to use in the men’s four-club and the alternating shots of mixed-doubles in the hit and giggle.

So strangely enough, every year since its conception years ago, the four-club golf tournament brings the best out of the golfers without negative effects of using only four clubs instead of the legal 14 clubs. The hit and giggle, triggered a lot of giggles from the ladies when their single-digit partners hit good recovery shots for them. As for the husbands partnered with their wives, you can see their nervous laugh-like giggle when asked how they did.

SUN BLOCK. Okay guys, get your sun blocks ready because it’s mighty hot out there and two more tournaments are coming. This Saturday is the monthly medal and on April 4 and 5, will be the much-awaited annual Union Bank of Switzerland golf tournament at CCC. Two days of golf but only one day to play. UBS has been sponsoring this golf tournament at CCC since 2000

When it rains, it pours! For me, this will be four straight tournaments. That should make me good, right? No, you have to check the competition because many of them have very sharp teeth.

The Copa de Casino Español tournament is usually about this time but has been moved to May because Copa overall chairman Nonoy Tirol decided May is a better schedule for most participants. The Copa tournament is a very well-planned and thoroughly manicured tournament and thus is another big-draw event with a lavish awarding dinner. Besides golf, the tournament includes tennis, badminton, billiards and “Texas hold-em” poker for the card-loving fellows.

April Fools Day is already next week. Lie all you can on that day but remember that some lies can be dangerous and can even be a sin. So practice moderation (the most common statement of our land nowadays).

If you have been paying attention to the golfing calendar, you should know that soon after Holy Week comes the Masters tournament in Augusta, Georgia. Now that Tiger Woods has lost his attempt for seven straight wins, he will be fiercely vying for the first to win four PGA major tournaments in the same year.

WINNERS. Our congratulations to the winners of the CCC four club golf tournament: Class A champion went to jungolfer Franz Olea (net 70) and first runnerup another jungolfer Lloyd Jefferson Go (net 71). The second and third runnerup awards went to Gabriel Yap Jr. (net 71) and Tony Jackson (net 72), respectively.

Class B champion was Henry Dy (net 65), while the runners up were Lesmes Garate (net 67), Albert Chiongbian (net 70), Bobit Avila (net 72). Class C champion was Ang Chiong (net 65), with runners up Johnny Siao (net 66), Ed Chiongbian (net 68), Ed Cimafranca (net 68). Class D champion was Cris Libi (net 64) and the runners up were Gerry Gollon (net 65), Marcelino Po (net 66) and Tony Tankaw (net 67).

Gloria Alazas and Carl Almario was team champion of the Hit and Giggle tournament with their lowest net of 60.5/ gross 78. Not too far behind were Nena and Kenneth Dyguani (net 61.5), Jeanette and Edwardson Chiu (net 65), April Escario and Kiyofumi Takahashi (net 66), Joan Castillo and Gilbert Yap (net 66), and Steve and Lalai Lava (net 67.5).

Golf Tip. To successfully do the clubhead lag for more clubhead speed, you must maintain the angle of your right forearm and the shaft during the downswing to keep that energy stored as long as you can before impact. If you release that angle too soon, you will be casting it and you will lose all the energy before reaching the ball.

Use your right wrist as the place to store your energy. When you start your downswing, think that you are driving your weight straight into the ground with your right hand and leg. Applying this downward pressure keeps the wrist fully hinged well into the downswing and allows you to unhinge it at the moment of near impact.
