Moises and Mendez-Palmares: Clap back
By Darwin John Moises and Michelle Mendez-Palmares
singles talk

MICHELLE: The recent surge of social networks in the Internet has resulted to an overload of mail in our Singlestalk inbox. There are friend requests from Friendster, MySpace, Facebook, Multiply, Flickr, Tagged.com, Fanbox, Wayn and Ringo (could the rest of the Beatles be far behind?). There are about 115 notable social networking websites and counting. I find it amusing that there are requests that so and so wants to become our loyal fans. Wow! No wonder celebrities act like royalty. It’s probably because they get pledges of loyalty from adoring fans. But it seems to me that loyalty is a cheap commodity these days because those who want to become my loyal fans don’t even know me. And I also don’t know them! How can one be loyal to something or someone unknown to them? Maybe those emails are spam and they taste nothing like my favorite luncheon meat!

DJ: The world is changing. An enormous convulsion is taking place. Last week was a good time to rest from the struggle not to be strapped onto life’s interminable treadmill of work and success. My 12 year-old self at times is poking me from behind asking me what the hell’s been up since I abandoned him in the curb of my house. That wasn’t not so long ago, yet far back enough to be another millennium! There really are a lot of things vying for our time and attention. And that gets us Gens X and Y all hopped up.

M: Another thing that amuses me (for now) are those questions you get from question it by curiosity solutions online. After answering yes or no, they show the percentage of people who answered yes and no. Here are some questions I’ve received: Would you rather be single than be in a relationship? Do you believe in love at first sight? Do you consider yourself to be a passionate person? Do you believe in ghosts? Do you believe Jun Lozada (I made this last one up!). I answered some of the questions not for lack of better things to do but because I was curious what other people think about the topic. On the question of whether or not I believe Mr. Lozada, suffice it to say that I think there are ghosts but I don’t really believe them. Hmmm…

DJ: Lozada who? It’s back to basics in being grateful that we are alive. Life can be beautiful even in this crazy world. We can choose to let our inner cheese shine through as we navigate through this buy-one-take-one era of media overload. When we feel the wind on our face, instead of bracing ourselves against it and worry about messing up the documents we probably have in one hand, why don’t we just close our eyes and experience it? Just like when we were kids, we spread our arms and fly with it until we fall to the ground laughing. Now that we’re grown-ups, we just don’t have the responsibility to teach kids. We also have the power to learn from them.

M: Yeah. It’s easy to be in a relationship these days. You just click “add as a friend” or “accept” and you’re friends. The question is what kind of relationship or friendship is that? It’s easy to be caught up in the wave of cyber relationships that we sometimes lose focus and forget our real relationships. Would you rather spend time with your Facebook friend or your father? Do you believe charity (love) begins at home? Do you consider yourself to be a good person/wife/mother or daughter? Do you believe in God? And lastly, do you really believe Jun Lozada? Next question, please!

DJ: As we embrace the world that’s becoming crazier every nanosecond, hopefully we’d still be able to see the high-full side of things. If we believe in the Force infinitely greater than us all; and have love, family, friends, health, good humor and a positive attitude toward life - then we already have everything. Wealth and good fortune can get us through but only to a certain extent. What’s more important is we still can see the world through a child’s eyes and still be rich in spirit. Besides, nothing makes us feel better than feeling young, even if it is only in that sense. So relax, ride your electric scooters and eat your free salmon carpacio!
