Sunday, March 30, 2008 Showcasing student creativity By Arch’t. Karl A.E.F. Cabilao, UAP
THE close of another academic year not only signals the beckoning of summer. It is also an opportunity to hand out accolades to exceptional works and exploits, all products of young students’ perseverance and hard work.
For the architecture and fine arts students of the University of San Carlos (USC), creativity plays a major role in achieving excellence.
This further prepares them toward real world application of theories. With every curtain call of a school year comes the college’s much-anticipated Annual Design Awards.
The creative souls behind the exemplary works showcased in this year’s weeklong exhibit were honored in a short program at the Ayala Center Cebu. The student oeuvres came from the various classes in the college: architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, advertising arts, painting arts and the architecture graduate school.
Emerging among this year’s overall winners (gold awardees) were fifth year architecture students Mark Anthony Andales, Niño Cempron, Vincent Ace Dueñas, Jason Christopher Ong and Ralph Richard Su.
Their winning entry was a class plate for their Architectural Design subject titled: “A Proposed Seafood Market and Restaurant in Bantayan Island, Cebu.”
Also in the program, not only were the students’ creative talents recognized, but so was the stage. It also served as a spot to showcase the students’ musical talents, like playing the violin and dancing ala Michael Jackson, much to the delight of everyone, especially dean Maxwell Espina and USC president Fr. Roderick Salazar, SVD.
And yes, the dean’s listers, and the new architecture board topnotchers and passers were also given acclaim. Indeed, every performer of a great feat deserves a pat in the back.
But a school-year-end event like the USC College of Architecture and Fine Arts’ Design Awards and Exhibit surely gives aspirants in the architecture profession, and budding artists a boost to always do their best in their craft.
