Cebu City beats Cebu Province, 4-3, makes finals in Cviraa

CEBU City survived the battle of unbeaten teams to move a step closer to a slot in the Palarong Pambansa.

Cebu City edged out Cebu Province, 4-3, in a penalty shootout yesterday at the Carlos P. Garcia Sports Complex in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.

In the first two minutes of the game, senior player Miles Chu scored a header coming off an accurate free kick from team captain TJ Mateo from the right side of the field making it a 1-0 advantage for Cebu City.

Cebu City’s glory was short-lived as Manjo Mayormita of Cebu Province answered with a goal in the waning seconds of the first half.

However, Cebu City coach Mario Ceniza said the goal by Mayormita should have been disallowed.

“The boys played good in the first half but were demoralized after the goal by Cebu Province that wasn’t called for offside by the linesman,” told Sun.Star in an interview yesterday.

Meanwhile, Don Bosco’s Glenn Ramos thinks differently and thought that the call was up to the referee and the linesmen because they had the best view of the action.

“We couldn’t clearly see if it was an offside or not because our bench was far,” said Ramos.

With no goals scored in the second half, the match went to a shootout, which was as competitive as expected with both teams tied 3-3 after the first five kickers.

Junby Romero of Cebu City converted his shot, while Cebu province missed for its 4-3 win.

With this win, Cebu City will enjoy a twice-to-beat advantage in the championship and a well-deserved rest, while Cebu Province will face off with Tagbilaran City early today to determine who faces Ceniza’s team in the championship game in the afternoon. (EKA)
