Unshakeable win for Niños on last day

WITH just one more day left, the Cebu City Niños can almost savor the sweet taste of victory in the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cvraa) in Tagbilaran, Bohol, as it built up a virtually insurmountable lead.

As of press time yesterday, Cebu City had racked up a total of 437 points collated from the athletes’ finishes in 12 sporting events.

Ball games, which are team events, are still being contested. These events are medal-rich and could change the competition’s outcome radically.

Temporarily in second place is the Cebu Province with 222 points. Bohol (168.9), Dumaguete (131.5) and Mandaue (125.2) complete the top five.

Making it virtually impossible for the other teams to catch up is the fact that there is a steady flow of gold medals going into the Cebu City’s cache on a daily basis.

Owning the bulk of Cebu City’s production are the swimming and athletics teams.

In the final day of the athletics contest, Cebu City ruled the tracks on all fronts to be handed the overall title with 120 points.

Yesterday, the team wrapped up its bid on a high note as it snatched all the gold medals in the relay events.

The secondary girls and boys teams topped the 4x400m relay with times of 4:23.87 and 3:43.63, respectively.

The girls tag team also topped the 4x100 m relay finishing with a time of 54.59 seconds, while the boys topped their division with a time of 45.31 seconds.

Also yesterday, Cebu City dancesport athletes, who are members of Dancesport Team Cebu City collected six more gold medals for the team. Rochelle Guerra and Lloyd William Blunga won the gold medal in the modern standard dance in the elementary division.

Kathleen Joy Deluvio and Klein Deluvio took the top plum in the standard dance of the secondary division, while Clare Mata and Samson Orlanes won in the Latin contest.

Cebu Province’s Carla Louia Abapo and Jet Miriacillo hampered a sweep for the City as they topped the elementary Latin contest.

The Cebu City teams, however, had little luck in baseball and boxing. Baseball was won by Cebu Province, which also won in the sipa competition, although Cebu City won in sepak takraw. (MCB)
