Talk Back: Cviraa tennis
By Flor Satera

THIS is in connection with the sports article last March 29, 2008 regarding the tennis fight during Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa), held in Tagbilaran City. The story was written by reporters bearing the initials MCB and EKA. The story entitled “Cebuanos Gold Rush” appeared on page A28.

I would like to comment the way the reporters deal with the story regarding the fight between Cebu Province’s Fritz Satera and Cebu City’s Jacob Lagman. It is evidently biased to the effect that they presented the side of Lagman up to why he lost the game to Satera. The reporters could have reach Satera’s camp to at least present their side. So they could have known that Satera also went home to attend his recognition at Our Lady of Pilar, Sibonga, Cebu on the same day that Lagman went home for his graduation.

If the reporters say that Lagman lost to Satera because his energy was drained, Satera even experienced more since he has to travel from Cebu City to his hometown in Sibonga town.

Like the camp of Lagman, it seems that the reporters also have difficulty in accepting the reality that Cebu Province’s Fritz Satera has finally defeated Cebu City’s Jacob Lagman. I can say that Lagman, being an athlete for that long haven’t eternalized the “spirit of sportsmanship.” If he could have done so, he should have gone up to the stage to receive his silver medal for the competition.

(Due to the sheer number of events and athletes in the Cviraa, the reporter's interviews were limited to familiar sources.

It was my discretion what to emphasize in the story. At that time, the story was about the exploits of the Cebu City athletes. There was no bias. However, I do acknowledge my failure to get your side. For that, I apologize. —MCB)
