Team probes cager's slay

A SPECIAL team was created to focus on investigating the death of college varsity player Lucky Pitogo.

Cebu Provincial Police Office Director Carmelo Valmoria told reporters yesterday that aside from robbery, they also wanted to look into other possible angles of the case, “considering nothing has been taken from him.”

Pitogo was riding his bicycle when three men shot him in Barangay San Vicente, Liloan Friday night. His cell phone was found under his body.

Valmoria would not elaborate on the details and admitted that they have no suspects yet. He also did not set a timetable for Liloan police to solve the case, only to expedite the investigation.

“He was too young to die. At 19 years old, he had a big future ahead of him. We really sympathize with the family,” he said.

Pitogo played as the center for the University of the Visayas Green Lancers and had dreams of joining the professionals in the big basketball leagues.

Residents of San Vicente have also called on authorities to pay special attention on the robbery incidents in their area.

Pitogo’s uncle and godfather Eleuterio Pitogo said that San Vicente used to be a safe village.

He also pointed out that the street was very dark and that a post in front of a school did not have a street light.

SPO4 Florenerio Apuado, acting Liloan police chief, urged residents not to openly use their cellular phones while they are out on the streets.

He said they try to maximize their personnel by conducting checkpoints at different times and that they have the highway covered.

However, some of the interior roads are left out, he admitted.

Valmoria, for his part, said the Liloan Police Station conducts checkpoints every day and night.

He said they need the community’s participation and urged those who spot suspicious-looking persons in interior barangays to immediately report them to the local police station. (MEA)
