Wednesday, April 02, 2008 Mandaue releases P150T to families of cops killed, hurt in rob alarm
MANDAUE City released cash assistance to the injured policeman and to the family of his companion, who was killed in a shootout with suspected robbers last Jan. 6.
Mayor Jonas Cortes turned over a P100,000 check to the family of the late SPO1 Pedro Sucion the other day and will turn over today P50,000 to PO2 Darius Conejos, who is still recuperating.
Alma, wife of Conejos, said her husband will be reporting for duty on April 15. He still carries the fatal slug in his right lung, as it is too risky for the doctors to remove it, and the policeman still feels pain if he takes a deep breath.
Homicide
Conejos and Sucion responded to a robbery alarm last Jan. 6 perpetrated by suspects Lauro “Jogro” Lumapas, Leo de la Victoria and Jonathan Samson.
Except for De la Victoria, the other two are now detained and all three are facing robbery with homicide and robbery with serious physical injuries charges.
The supposed turnover of the check to Conejos yesterday did not push through, as only Alma came and the policeman was not around. The voucher and receipt requires Conejos’ signature.
Lumapas, Dela Victoria and Samson reportedly robbed taxi driver Arnel Quibot dawn of Jan. 6, and told him to take the vehicle to a secluded area in front of the Cebu International Convention Center at the Mandaue Reclamation Area.
The suspects then fired a warning shot to silence the driver and they fled on foot.
They then hailed and boarded a passing tricycle driven by Belmar Arnado.
It was at this point that the two policemen appeared the ordered Arnado to stop.
Finished off
The suspects then fired at Sucion, who was standing in front of the tricycle, and shot Conejos twice who was about to approach them from the side.
Sucion was hit in the stomach and Conejos in the shoulder and chest. One of the suspects approached and finished off Sucion and left the bleeding Conejos for dead.
