Tomas to donate, guess what, one fire extinguisher

AT the risk of offending some of the townsfolk, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña will ask the City Council to approve the donation of one fire extinguisher to the fire station of Oslob town.

But Osmeña explained he is doing a good deed for the people of Oslob.

In his news conference yesterday, the mayor said he hopes the City’s donation will encourage the Cebu Provincial Government to address the problem on the lack of facilities in the fire stations in the municipalities.

When asked why the City would be donating only one fire extinguisher, Osmeña said: “Why? It’s the thought that counts, diba?”

“O sige, sa akong personal muhatag sad ko ug usa ka balde para naay safety ilang mga tawo (Okay, I will give a pail so the townsfolk will be assured of safety). This is a form of encouragement for the Province to pay attention to their problem. If I don’t do this, the Province won’t pay attention. We will donate, no need for a full-page ad (to announce it) na,” he continued.

If his help is sought, the mayor said he will also help in his personal capacity in the reconstruction of the Oslob Parish, one of the oldest churches in the province.

The Immaculate Conception Parish and its convent were destroyed in a fire last March 26, an incident that put to the test the firefighting capability of the firefighters and their facilities there.

Oslob’s two firetrucks were defective, and the firemen and some 10 residents had to push one of the trucks to the fire scene.

“They can’t take care of their own people but they can give P5 million to build a school in Lahug, pabida-bida lang gyud sila (They just want to appear as heroes). Mugasto sila para sa (They spent for the) overpriced na CICC pero (but) they can’t take care of their investors, and they are number one in terms of investment opportunities ha,” Osmeña added.
