Wednesday, April 02, 2008 After Asian stint, Siso hunts for national title
FRESH off her stint from the Asian Tennis 14-Under Championships, Cebuano tennis stalwart Sally Mae Siso is back to wreck havoc in the local scene.
Siso, of the University of San Carlos South Campus, arranged a quarterfinal showdown of the Truflex Tennis Tournament after a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jana Hernandez in the second round of the Girls 14 division yesterday at the Rizal Memorial tennis courts.
Siso is seeded No. 1 in this competition. However, she is just ranked third in the national ranking and she has her eyes on taking the top spot.
The current topnotcher is Shanine Olivarez and the no. 2 is Macy Gonzales.
Siso used to be the top-ranked player in her age group, but since most competitions are concentrated in Manila, she failed to take part in a handful of them, which became detrimental to her ranking as she lost points in the process.
Now that summer is here, Siso is doubling her efforts to reclaim her top bearing or at least keep her spot in the top three.
Back-to-back competitions are lined up for Siso, making her her summer full. Siso recently spent two weeks in Jakarta, Indonesia, where she took part in a clinic sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation along with Olivarez and the RP boys team and a number of other choice players from other parts of Asia. She arrived last Monday in time for the Trufelx event.
She finished 12th in the Asian competition and earned valuable ITF points. In the local scene, Siso also needs to rack up more points in order to keep her no. 3 rank. The Truflex competition is a Group 1 event that stakes higher points. (MCB)
