Wednesday, April 02, 2008 Tacurong tops Wekaf qualifying with 16 golds
THE powerhouse stick fighting team from Tacurong City stole the limelight from the local bets as they topped the World Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation Qualifying Tournament dubbed the Quest for the Best 5 over the weekend at the SM City Cebu Entertainment Center.
The 27-man contingent from Tacurong City came to the foray prepared. The team, represented by the Filipino Arts Modified Arnis Federation, wrested the overall title after winning 16 of the 31 titles at stake. The team finished with 16 gold medals, 18 silvers and 11 bronzes.
Taking second place were the arnisadors of Southwestern University, who wound up with 10 golds and three bronzes, while at a distant third was the lean Mandaue Comprehensive Arnis Team, which managed to pluck five golds and eight bronzes.
Southeast Asian Games in Manila, Rochelle Quirol and Mylene Garson stepped aside to give way for teammates Airene Arpesto, April Garde and Jeoffrey Arpesto, who all collared two gold medals each with an extra silver from Airene. (MCB)
