Lagman wins 2 matches to make quarterfinals

AFTER getting on the wrong end of a huge upset in the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association, Cebuano tennis stalwart Jacob Lagman made up for it by scoring two wins yesterday in the Truflex Tennis Tournament at the Rizal Memorial tennis courts.

Lagman was supposed to play his first game last Tuesday and had led, 5-1, over Mark Escares before the match had to be stopped because of a heavy downpour. The rain forced organizers to reschedule yesterday.

Playing two matches did not seem to bother Lagman as he easily sailed through his assignments against unseeded players.

Lagman finished what he started the other day and continued to trounce Escares, 6-1, 6-1 and later beat Lexter Quiatara, 6-1, 6-0 to move to the quarterfinal round.

Going against unseeded players came easy for Lagman and today marks his start against seeded players.

This caused some jitters—not much on Jacob—but on the people from the sidelines. “We are praying Jacob will win,” said his mother Julie. Today, Lagman will be facing Calvin Canlas in the quarterfinals.

Canlas and Lagman had always gone head to head since their 10-Under days, and their paths have once more crossed in the Boys 14 class.

The Truflex event is the first Group 1 event for Lagman in the Boys 14 division. Lagman, is the No. 2 player in this competition, while Canlas is seeded sixth. (MCB)
