Friday, April 04, 2008 Waterfront Mactan spreads Earth Hour message
EARTH Hour is the highlight of a major campaign to encourage businesses, communities and individuals to take simple steps needed to cut greenhouse gas emissions and become more energy efficient.
With its birthplace in Sydney, Australia, Earth Hour’s concept is to deliver a dynamic message about the need for action on global warming by switching off non-essential lights and unplugging idle appliances for one hour.
This symbolic event was actively participated in by the Waterfront Airport Hotel and Casino (WAHC) on Saturday, March 29, as it signed up for the Earth Hour movement and counted down the minutes to blackout.
“It is an honor to be part of the solution to climate change, seeing that not many industries in the Philippines, particularly in Cebu, have chosen to take meaningful measures on the most significant threat to life on Earth. Being one of the few Cebu-based companies to participate in this event, we hope to reinforce this environmental act and, hopefully, entice other businesses and households to strengthen the fight against global warming by joining this collective stand next year, and every year after that,” said hotel manager Hembler Mendoza.
As WAHC embarked on the Earth Hour journey, switching off from 8 to 9 p.m. along with over 24 global cities, the Hotel’s lobby, driveway, parking areas, and wining and dining options like Uno, Verandah, Golden Calesa and Cebu Korea Town were veiled in darkness with only candlelight and good conversation as entertainment.
