Friday, April 04, 2008 San Beda's import Eke wants to be Pinoy
SAN Beda College Red Lions center and Nigerian exchange student Samuel Eke announced his willingness to become a naturalized Filipino citizen to help our campaign in the international basketball scene.
The 24-year-old 6-foot-9 behemoth is willing to undergo the long process of naturalization after feeling he can help the Filipinos try to restore the old glory in Asian and international basketball
Ekwe has been playing basketball in the country for three years and emotionally revealed his love for basketball and the Filipinos in general since he was enticed to play hoops after his first love football was not a popular sport in his school.
This revelation was welcome news for amateur basketball godfather Mikee Romero, the team owner of the PBL’s league leading Harbour Centre.
The country is now considering neutralizing foreign players to help our campaign in international basketball.
This idea has been flaunted by a European basketball coach who came to the country to conduct a coaching seminar last year.
Ekwe will be an addition to the Philippine team bound to the import-laden Southeast Asian Basketball Association (Seaba) Champions Cup in April 4 to 6 in Jakarta, Indonesia, which will be bannered by the Harbour Centre-backed RP squad.
Ekwe helped the Koy Banal mentored SBC Red Lions win back-to-back NCAA titles in 2006 and 2007. (RCM from PR)
