CV’s labor sector fills demand for workers locally, globally

THE region’s labor sector is answering the demand for workers not only locally, but internationally as well.

“Unemployment is a phenomenal problem,” said Jayjay Viray, general manager of JobsDB, an online recruitment company.

At the close of 2007, the unemployment rate in Central Visayas dropped to 11.3 percent.

However, the nationwide increase of jobless Filipinos is not helping answer the problem despite the growth of the information technology and the business process outsourcing industry, Viray said.

Viray also told reporters during the JobsDB launch last week that the current low employment rate in the country can also be attributed to the demand for Filipino workers abroad.

“We are not just coping with the demand (for jobs) locally but internationally as well,” she said.

JobsDB’s web content and communications manager Cora Llamas also said that there are a number of vacant positions right now, as posted over their website, however, only few applicants qualify for the positions.

But their company is helping increase the chances of jobseekers in finding employment.

Viray said that they tried to create the most “idiot-proof system” to help jobseekers.

That is why they are asking applicants who hunt jobs at JobsDB to make use of the resume template to improve their chances of landing a job.

“When you go to JobsDB, it’s an all-in-one package,” Llamas added.

In demand

Viray also said that there are job openings in every sector but those that are considered “in demand” are workers who qualify for work in information technology, engineering, healthcare and accounting.

In the Philippines, she said that there also a scarcity of workers in the education sector.

She hopes that many students will study to become teachers.

Cebu City Councilor Eduardo Rama, who attended the launch in behalf of Mayor Tomas Osmeńa, said the city has tried to be proactive in addressing unemployment problems.

He said that the city even pioneered programs like job fairs and a global recruitment which have given jobs to more than 10,000 applicants.

But he admitted that there is still more to do.

“That is why we are very elated with the coming of JobsDB to help us provide opportunities for jobseekers in Cebu,” Rama said. (DME)
