Tuesday, April 08, 2008 5 hurt, one in critical condition, as man engages in shooting spree in Mandaue
AFTER he was mauled by a group of persons, a man retaliated and shot five people in a sari-sari store in Mandaue City Sunday night.
One of the victims remained in critical condition as of yesterday. One victim is only 12 years old.
Police said the suspect Rodrigo Andrino, 44, shouted, ”Nia na si Bandido (here’s comes the bandit),” and opened fire at a crowd in Sitio Cassava, Barangay Cambaro using an improvised shotgun.
The shooting took place at 10:50 p.m.
Hannah May Magalso, 23, was hit in the head. She was still fighting for her life yesterday.
Wounded
Edisa Matbagon, 30 was hit in the neck; Jonathan Gicain, 30, was hit in his leg; and Giegger Flores, 28, was hit in different parts of his body. Except for Magalso, all victims are still single. They were taken to the Vicente Sotto Medical Center yesterday.
SPO1 Reynaldo Orot said the Swat team arrested Andrino. He is now detained together with his son Roland and his friend Felicisimo Apas, 50. Apas reportedly hid the weapon. The gun and some empty shells were later recovered.
Yesterday, parents of the 12-year-old victim reported the incident to the police. The boy was hit in the leg.
Armed
Opao Police chief Senior Insp. Oscar Monterroyo said Andrino was still drunk yesterday. He said that before the shooting, a group of men mauled the suspect near the store. Andrino went home and returned already armed and his son with him.
He then fired at the crowd near the store. It has yet to be established if the injured were part of the group that mauled Andrino.
Andrino and his son fled after the shooting. Witnesses later led police to the suspects. Apas reportedly hid the gun, which police seized after witnesses told them about it.
Monterroyo said the suspect will most probably face a “frustrated homicide” case. Since a child was hurt, the penalty could be harsher. (OCP)
