BARANGAY Labogon bested 12 other teams to rule the first Mandaue City Inter-Barangay Chess Tournament 2008 at the Mandaue City Hall ground floor the other day.
Labogon, with players Ramsy Pedrosa, National Master Leonardo Alidane, Reynaldo Flores and Danny Ralota, finished the tournament with 39 points after 13 rounds via a single round robin format to bag the crown and the P8,000 top purse and trophy.
In the penultimate round, Labogon scored 3.5 points against the team from Pagsabongan to pace their team with 35 points courtesy of Pedrosa, Alidane and Flores, while Ralota ended a draw with Roman Solon.
It was an easy walk for Barangay Labogon in the last round after having a bye situation that gave them four points to edge out Barangay Paknaan.
Paknaan ended the tournament with 34 points and took the second spot and the P5,000 prize with trophy after scoring three points in the last round courtesy of Eden and Harold Diano, and Samuel Tenio against the team from Barangay Banilad.
Eden defeated Ariel Orosio of a Queen’s Pawn in 25 moves, while Harold, using Guicco Piano, beat Adrian Orosio in 34 moves. (NSM)
