Thursday, April 10, 2008 4 Cebu groups get BAP-SBP slots
FOUR Cebu-based organizations were granted associate membership by the Board of Trustees of the BAP-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas in a board meeting held last week at the PLDT tower in Makati.
Unlike the regular members, associate membership is given to sports associations that “conduct programs in or allied with basketball as a competitive sport but do not qualify for active membership.”
They, however, have a chance to change their status but need to apply by sending in their credentials. They are given until April 15 to comply with requirements and only the regular members will enjoy voting powers for the coming May 31 elections.
The only active member from Cebu is the Cebu School Athletic Foundation Inc. Active membership is for leagues that have regular competitions for at least two straight years and only Cesafi qualified from Cebu.
Those granted associate membership are the Visayas Athletic Amateur association, Mindanao-Visayas Basketball Association, the M. Lhuillier Sports Development Foundation and the Cebu Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
A total of 96 applications were submitted for consideration but only 15 passed the requirements and were granted associate membership by the nominations and elections committee of BAP-SBP.
The memberships are classified into active, associate and affiliate according to certain standards.
Cesafi joined the ranks of University Athletic Association of the Philippines, National Collegiate Athletic Association, National Collegiate Athletic Association – South, Philippine Basketball Association, Philippine Basketball League among others that were granted active membership and will get a chance to vote in this May’s national congress.
