Sunday, April 13, 2008 Gorres title defense moved to May
AFTER his scheduled foe, mandatory challenger Francis Miyeyusho, got decked in the first round, the first title defense of Z “The Dream” Gorres’ International Boxing Federation Intercontinental super flyweight crown will be deferred to a later date.
Gorres was scheduled to exchange blows with the Tanzanian challenger on May 18 at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu City but unfortunately Miyeyusho suffered a first round knockout loss last April 5 from Nick Otieno in Kenya, forcing the Gorres camp to ask for a substitute.
ALA promotions president Michael Aldeguer said that they will request the IBF for an alternative opponent to replace the fallen Tanzanian.
“I’m going to contact IBF and ask permission for another opponent for Gorres,” Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu in an interview yesterday.
Gorres got the vacant IBF Intercontinental title after an eighth-round KO against Eric Ortiz in the World Cup Boxing last Aug. 11 in Sacramento.
“The date of the fight will probably be on the last week of May or the first week of June,” said Aldeguer.
Fellow ALA boy and World Boxing Organization minimum weight kingpin Donnie “Ahas” Nietes will most likely join Gorres in the fight card as he defends his title from mandatory challenger Daniel “El Olimpico” Reyes of Columbia.
Nietes was supposed to be in the Nonito Donaire vs. Hussein Hussein fight card in Dubai, which was promoted by Noli Eala of Third Force promotions, but was shelved because of problems with the sponsorship in Dubai.
Nietes acquired the vacant WBO crown after a unanimous decision over Pornsawan Kratingdaenggym last Sept. 30 at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino.
For his feat, Nietes was awarded as Boxer of the Year along with three others in the Elorde Awards. (EKA)
