Experience bests youth in Frasco Volleyball Cup
EXPERIENCE prevailed over youthful agility as the talent-laden GGC squad easily toppled Heartvit-Abellana National School in the first Mayor Duke Frasco Volleyball Cup last Sunday at the Panphil Frasco Cultural and Sports Complex in Liloan.
GGC boasts of a powerhouse lineup including recently-crowned regional champ and runnerup of the Nestea Beach Volleyball Competition, Jusabelle Brillo, Janez Igot, Florian Gutierrez and Janelle Tabio. The four, however, opted to skip the game but did not leave the team crippled as it still has a sturdy cast of former collegiate varsities in Julette Marikit, Marissa Lagancia, Kimberly Gendrauli, Janeth Ponte and Joreen Sanchez, to easily disposed off the ANS squad.
Meanwhile, in the men’s division, another Nestea regional winner, Jonrey Sasing and James Rivera, also missed their scheduled match in the competition to leave Designer Spec to fend for themselves.
Their absence, however, were not felt at all as Designer Specs went on to hack a two-setter 25-16, 25-23 win over Tekzone, which was anchored by former RP team libero Jerome Capada.
Stepping up for Designer Specs were Roel Lato and Angelino Visoc, who are former varsity members. The win catapulted Designer Specs to the top of the standings with an unblemished 3-0 record, after defeating D’ Che Spa last Saturday in a backdoor, three-set win.
D’ Che Spa made up for that loss and won over Southwestern University Nursing squad, 25-22, 25-15, to improve its slate to 2-1.
In the other women’s contest, SWU bounced back from their opening day loss against University of San Carlos and registered its first victory after a default win over Consolacion, which failed to come up with the required number of players during the game, therefore forfeiting the match.
The top three teams in the competition will pocket P20,000, P15,000 and P10,000 respectively. (MCB)
