Tuesday, April 15, 2008 Prisaa 7 fails target, drops to fourth place
IT WAS a failed mission for the Central Visayas Private Schools Athletic Association (Prisaa 7) athletes as they slipped one place lower from their previous rank in the recently concluded 2008 National Prisaa Meet held in Zamboanga City.
The Prisaa 7 athletes were aiming to improve on their two consecutive third place finishes in 2006 and 2007 but failed to achieve their goal and slipped a notch lower to settle at fourth place.
The Central Visayas athletes finished with 20 gold medals, 39 silvers and 48 bronze medals to finish fourth overall.
The National Capital Region (NCR) copped the overall title, pulling away from the competition as early as the second day of action, before closing their medal haul to 158 golds, 42 silvers and 37 bronze medals as of 7 p.m. last Sunday.
More golds
NCR could still add six more gold medals to its collection as their volleyball players were still playing Region 3 Prisaa in the finals at press time.
It was NCR’s first appearance since the 2002 National Prisaa meet in Cebu, when two NCR teams showed up in the Cebu City National Prisaa —the NCR South and NCR North.
Third place
NCR dislodged three-time overall champion Western Visayas (Prisaa 6) by a wide margin of 104 gold medals. Prisaa 6 ended with 54-76-42, while Davao (Prisaa 11) collected 22 gold medals, 22 silver and 62 bronzes to wind up at third place.
Host region Western Mindanao Prisaa (Prisaa 9) settled for fifth with 11 gold , three silvers and 24 bronze medals.
Central Visayas ball players also finished below par with the men’s basketball, last year’s champions, settling for the bronze medal. Western Mindanao (Prisaa 9) won the gold medal in the Men’s basketball title after beating Prisaa 11, 102-101, in the finals.
The Prisaa 7 women’s basketball team, meanwhile, settled for silver medal, the women’s volleyball team finished with a bronze, while the sepak takraw squad also took home a bronze. (RCM)
