Speak out: It’s best to act now By Ritchie D. Nolasco Banilad, Cebu City
WE cannot deny it.
The rice crisis was only the beginning.
In the following months, we will all endure a food crisis that's been spreading worldwide.
And you know what that means?
We have to tighten our belts and make budgets seriously for the rest of the year.
Even giant companies like Pizza Hut, McDonald's and Starbucks won't be spared from the tight supplies of wheat, sugar, salt, coffee beans and rice.
As if these were not enough, there are hoarders everywhere who seek to profit from our suffering!
What must Cebu do to survive?
Aside from importing, we need to cut down on exporting our crops (notably corn) to feed ourselves first and it is logical since the peso gained so much against the dollar.
More importantly, Capitol should start improving Cebu's agriculture by supporting our farmers and setting up new rice paddies, new corn fields, etc.
The food crisis could last as long as 10 years, so it's best we act now!
