Thursday, April 17, 2008 31 colleges in CV to hike tuition
OUT of the 152 higher education institutions (HEIs) in Central Visayas, 31 have applied for tuition increase for the coming school year.
About 90 percent of the schools have already complied with the requirements set by the Commission on Higher Education (Ched) 7.
Less than 10 schools, which the Ched did not identify, still lack the documents or have not submitted a single requirement except for the letter of intent.
“We will be following them up to check if they will pursue their plans of increasing tuition,” said Ched 7 Education Supervisor Dante Cabunilas.
He started receiving requirements after Mar. 31, the deadline of the submission of the letters of intent to Ched 7.
After processing, he informed several schools that lack either a certificate of compliance of a previous tuition increase, minutes of proper consultation with the students, comparative schedule of tuition for the current year and the proposed rates or the latest audited financial statement, among others.
Applications
These schools were given until April 15 to complete the papers.
That will give Cabunilas until the last week of April to process them before he will send them to the Ched Central Office to “acknowledge” the applications.
Cabunilas said that final list of HEIs with their corresponding proposed tuition rates will be available at the end of the month.
In the updated list, the new school to the list is St. Theresa’s College.
The other schools, mostly in Cebu City and the Cebu Province, include AMA Computer College-Cebu City, Asian College of Technology, Cebu Doctors’ University and Cebu Institute of Technology.
Also in the list are University of Cebu-Main, University of San Carlos, University of San Jose-Recoletos, University of Southern Philippines and University of the Visayas (UV)-main campus.
In the secondary level, 63 high schools informed the Department of Education (DepEd) 7 of their intent to increase tuition rates as of yesterday.
DepEd 7 records show that 19 of the schools are from Cebu Province and 14 are from Cebu City.
The highest proposed tuition increase is 20 percent by the UV-Pardo and UV-Minglanilla.
The lowest proposed tuition hike is four percent by the Ibale Center for Academe Inc. in Mandaue City.
The Child Development in Balamban-Cebu is among the secondary schools that informed DepEd 7 that it has no intention of increasing its school fees.
The deadline for the submission of the applications and the complete requirements is on May 31.
DepEd 7’s list of elementary schools applying for tuition increase will be available next week yet. (NRC)
