Accident causes 3-hour traffic jam

ANOTHER accident caused a massive traffic jam in Mandaue City yesterday, highlighting problems in the city’s system.

A Cebu City-bound six-wheeler truck reportedly lost its brakes, hitting three vehicles and causing a collision that involved seven vehicles at 7:50 a.m. yesterday on J.P. Rizal St. in Mandaue City. The accident sent 12 people to the hospital and caused a traffic jam that lasted three hours.

It was on the same area near the Canduman junction that two trucks collided last April 3, causing a massive traffic jam that lasted five hours.

Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes the other day asked the city’s traffic board to speed up the making of mobile traffic signs to direct motorists and maintaining narrow barangay roads in Barangay Cubacub to serve as alternate routes during major accidents.

Yesterday’s accident was reportedly caused by a Cebu City-bound six-wheeler truck that lost its brakes and hit a motorcycle, dump truck and an Isuzu passenger jeepney, all heading to Cebu city.

Motorcycle driver Joel Gapo was not injured.

But upon impact, the Isuzu passenger jeepney was pushed toward the opposite lane, hitting an L300 van and an Isuzu dump truck, both heading North of Cebu.

On impact the Isuzu dump truck moved backwards, hitting two Fuso Canter vehicles.

Injured were the drivers of the six-wheeler (vehicle B in graphics) and Isuzu passenger jeepney (vehicle A) and 10 of its passengers.

At 5:30 p.m. on April 3, two trucks collided at the junction of Canduman and north road, causing a traffic jam that lasted until 11:30 p.m.

The collision caused the dumptruck to fall on its side, scattering its limestone cargo on the road and blocking both lanes.

That incident made Mandaue City officials realize the need for alternate routes to the north road.

Cortes said the traffic board, in their last meeting, decided to come up with mobile and permanent traffic signs to direct motorists and warn them of accident-prone roads.

Cortes said there is a small road perpendicular to H. Abellana st (Can-duman road), that leads to Hilltop, a part of Conso-lacion town. But the barangay road is only four meters wide so they are considering another parallel barangay road in Barangay Cubacub to complement this route for motorists going to and coming from Consolacion.

Cortes also sees the need to coordinate with the Consolacion traffic office, through Mayor Avelino Gungob, to warn motorists in case of a traffic jam on the north road.

Cortes also ordered the Mandaue City Engineering Office to maintain the alternate routes in Barangay Cubacub.

Injured in yesterday’s accident were Jose P. Montejo, 42, driver of the six-wheeler truck; Richard Mancao, 34, driver of the Isuzu passenger jeepney, and passengers John Rey Donaire, 25; Charlito Pantaleon, 26; Kent Hernaez, 28; Edgar Paul Auman, 18; Jaime Planas, 18; Arnulfo Lauron, 41; Giovanni P. Flores, 30; Ma. Lizelda Flores, 32; Juna Rayco, 34 and Flora Mae Angtud, 25. (OCP)
