Barrita: Not yet, Mike
By Eddie O. Barrita
Small Bites

CEBU City Mayor Tommy Osmeña said he is willing to resign if only to ensure funding for non-government organizations (NGOs) that help make Cebu a livable city.

I can almost see Vice Mayor Mike Rama trying to stifle a smile.

No. Not yet, Mike.

Mayor Tommy said he’ll finish his term because there is still much work to be done on the South Road Properties (SRP).

He will also continue to release funds to NGOs despite a COA memo that forbids any local government unit from giving money to any NGO whose officials are related to any local official involved in the release of the funds.

Cebu zoomed to the top as the Philippines’ most populous province with a 3.85 million population as of Aug. 1, 2007, according to the 2007 census.
Expect presidential wannabes to frequent Cebu as 2010 nears.

***

Cebu’s population entitles the province to four or five more members in the House of Representatives.

But Rep. Raul del Mar said there’s still a long way to go before new districts can be created.

Are sitting congressmen willing to part with a portion of their bailiwicks?

***

There are 88.57 million Filipinos as of Aug. 1, 2007, according to the 2007 population census.

The Philippine population has swollen from 76.50 million in 2000 and 68.62 in 1995, based on the 2000 and 1995 census.

More mouths to feed, more votes to be bought.

With more mouths to feed, government should rethink their position on the push for biofuels production, resulting in shrinking farm lands available to grow food.

UN Special Rapporteur for the Right to Food Jean Ziegler even called massive production of biofuels as “a crime against humanity” because of its impact on global food prices.

More than 41,000 people have viewed on YouTube the video on a rectal surgery in a Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center operating room full of doctors and nurses who were laughing like hyenas.

There goes the Philippines’ medical tourism.
