Saturday, April 19, 2008 WBO, WBA and IBF champ joins Pacquiao derby
ANOTHER champion is joining the Pacquiao derby, and this time it’s triple belt owner Nate Campbell.
This early, a battle between Campbell, the World Boxing Organization, World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation lightweight titleholder is in the works.
However, for the fight to push through, Pacquiao (46-3-2, 35 KOs) has to have a lightweight belt first and he can get it if he wins his match against WBC lightweight kingpin David Diaz (32-5-1, 25 KOs).
Campbell’s manager Terry Trekas said there are talks for a fight but nothing is concrete yet because a lot of things can still change.
“It is a real conversation but Pacquiao has to get past David Diaz first. Everyone is talking like he is going to walk right through Diaz. That’s a tough fight,” said Terry
Trekas, Campbell’s manager, in a report posted at www.doghouseboxing.com.
“Any number of things can happen. Anything can happen between now and June 28. He (Pacquiao) could lose. They may revisit their options after that fight. Who knows? It’s a great conversation but we’ll just have to wait and see what happens June 28,” he added.
Pacquiao is set to return to the US to train for eight weeks in Freddie Roach’s famed Wild Card Gym in preparation for Diaz.
Aside from Campbell, other Pacquiao prospects are British slugger Ricky “Hitman” Hatton (43-1, 31 KO’s) and Juan Manuel Marquez (48-4-1, 35 KO’s).
Meanwhile, Golden Boy Promotions is considering a mega match between Pacquiao and Hatton in 2009, possibly in the Briton’s backyard, London. (EKA)
