Monday, April 21, 2008 Lapu asks DepEd to to do better
LAPU-Lapu City is asking the Department of Education (DepEd) in the city to strive better following its poor showing in the 2007 self-rating on educational programs.
City Hall is asking that social workers in daycare centers be trained and provided with textbooks in compliance with the newly-issued Executive Order 685.
“We have a kalabasa (award) in this area because we lack the logistics, including pre-school buildings,” Vice Mayor Mario Amores said.
Amores said the executive order mandates that DepEd share its resources with the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
The Local Governance Performance Management System (LGPMS) rated the city “very poor” on its program for education because it does not have adequate pre-schools and lacks teachers to handle extension classes and classrooms for evening high school classes.
LGPMS is chaired by City Administrator Teodulo Ybanez. It adopted the grading system of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) in evaluating the city’s programs.
It submits a report every three years as guide for a new administration in coming up with an executive-legislative agenda.
“Basically this is a transformation of some of our daycare centers into pre-schools, because this is where the city is lacking,” he said.
Maximizing the use of city-owned lots by requiring the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to build a two-storey school building if ever it has new school projects in the city is also another alternative, he said.
“We can have more classrooms kung two-storey buildings and allot some of those for pre-schoolers,” he said.
The city has yet to receive a copy of the order, but Amores said he was told about its provision by Malacanang officials. (AIV)
