THE University of Southern Philippines Alumni FC ruled the 10-team 1st Uptown United Invitational Football Tournament with a tough win over the Don Bosco Pipol yesterday at the University of the Philippines High School grounds.
At first, both teams were evenly matched and showed stellar plays at both ends of the field but Archie Villa of USP Alumni FC broke the silence as he struck from the right wing and hit his target giving his team the 1-0 lead in the 14th minute.
DB Pipol tried their best to tie the game but they failed to came up with the equalizer before the whistle blew, giving the USP Alumni FC the championship trophy in the Men’s category.
Meanwhile, due to the time constraints, the women’s championship was decided by a penalty shootout.
Coach Gary Panagsagan was in a unique spot as both his University of San Carlos teams clashed in the championship penalty shootout, with his team A taking the crown.
USC A got the title due to the amazing goalkeeping skills of Jiva Ledesma for their 2-0 victory. Ledesma blocked two of USC team B’s penalty kicks, while Valerie Rafanan and Courtney Canque scored for USC team A.
Both teams had identical records in the eliminations, with two wins and two draws.
Earlier in the semifinals USC team A trampled Sacred Heart Girls, 3-0, with Canaque, Erika Casas and Rene Songaila scoring for USC.
Meanwhile, in the other semifinal match USC team B beat Science High FC, 2-0, in a penalty shootout. (EKA)
