Sixty join Rose Pharmacy chess

MORE than 60 players are expected to display their skills and best moves when the Rose Pharmacy Chess Tournament opens at SM Entertainment Plaza this weekend.

Tournament official Tony Cabibil yesterday said the tournament, which is open to all chess enthusiasts, will be divided into Open and the Kiddies and Juniors categories.

The players will be given 40 minutes of each play to finish via a seven-round Swiss system that will start on April 26 at 12 noon and on the following day at 1 p.m.

Winners will receive P3,000 for the first prize, while P2,000 and P1,000 for the second and third prize, respectively.

While those who will make it to the top ten will also receive cash prizes.

Registration is pegged at P100, Cabibil said.

On the other hand, the Kiddies and Juniors will also have the same format but they will have to finish 15 minutes each play on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.

Registration is pegged at P40 while winners will receive P500 1st place; P300 for 2nd place; P200 for the third placer and P100 for the fourth placer.

Cabibil said that registration starts today and may call Marvin Ruelan at 09164232335 for inquiries.

Meanwhile, the monthly handicapping chess tournament of the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association will also be held this Sunday at 2 p.m at the same venue.

Cepca players will start their bid for the grand finals showdown at the end of the year when they will be competing for the title representing for the month of April this Sunday.

The players will be given 15 minutes each play to finish via a five round swiss system.

Registration is pegged at P150. (NSM)
