Street dances mark Kadaugan opening

A DANCE interpretation of the historic battle in Mactan by a contingent of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor)-Mactan branch drew loud applause in the first street dance festival marking the opening salvo of the week-long celebration.

American national Mark Rudd played the role of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in the play.

“First time pa ni but very successful..cooperative lang kayo ang atong mga hotel ug resorts dinhi sa ato,” said City Councilor Damian Gomez, who chairs the tourism commission.

Gomez said he expects overcrowding at the Liberty Shrine in Barangay Mactan on Sunday when it will be Manny Pacquiao’s and Dennis Trillo’s turn to play the roles of Datu Lapu-Lapu and Magellan.

With just three bolo strikes, Lapu-Lapu killed Magellan in the play, to load applause of spectators. Mike Bahian, who played Datu Lapu-Lapu, then shouted “Kadaugan sa Mactan!”

Four hotels, Pagcor and the Mactan Cebu International Airport joined the festival. Each paid for the props and costumes of their dancers. The street dance started at the St. Joseph School grounds to the Liberty Shrine, which is 1.5 kilometers away.

At the shrine, each contingent performed a ten-minute free-style dance demonstration.

A food festival by the different hotels followed the activity. (AIV)
