Friday, April 25, 2008 PASG cited for drive against ‘unlawful’ pork
THE National Federation of Hog Farmers Inc. (NFHFI) commended the government’s anti-smuggling group for curbing illegal meat imports and protecting micro-enterprises in the country.
The NFHFI said smuggling poses a setback for the country’s hog growers and farmers.
The federation handed the PASG, represented by Director for Intelligence Jaih Francia, during the opening of the 17th Annual Hog Convention and Trade Exhibit at the Cebu International Convention Center.
The opening of the three-day convention was attended by Emiko Perdi, agricultural counselor for the United States Department of Agriculture, party-list Rep. Nicanor Briones of the Agricultural Sector Alliance of the Philippines and leaders in the hog raising industry.
The convention will feature seminars and fora on issues related to hog raising, like swine diseases and pig genetics. It aims to create awareness on hog raising, promote
backyard farming and improve the quality of pork produced by local producers.
About 2,000 people are expected to attend the convention. This year’s trade exhibit is expected to be the largest by far, with 120 booths featuring essentials for hog raising. Five companies also have live hog exhibits. (Strawberry Yap, St. Theresa’s College Intern)
